About OAPE

Oneonta Area for Public Education is dedicated to informing the rural communities in our area about current education reforms and their impact on students, teachers, parents, and taxpayers. A one-size-fits-all model that focuses on data and accountability is quickly replacing authentic teaching and learning in our public schools, which are suffering while testing and curriculum companies are getting rich. We are concerned about high-stakes testing, excessive standardized testing, Common Core, an unfair teacher evaluation system (APPR), scripted curriculum, and the possibility of our children’s private data being collected and sold. We believe that Common Core is doing more harm than good. We support a parent’s right to opt out of unnecessary tests. We support teachers who are the best equipped to design curriculum as well as evaluate our children.

OAPE is part of a nationwide grassroots effort to help all concerned citizens stop the wholesale privatization of public education, end the “one-size-fits-all” approach to teaching and learning, and bring more meaning back to our classrooms.  OAPE is an affiliate of the New York State Allies for Public Education (NYSAPE).

OAPE supports ALL parents, students, educators, and taxpayers in our area, regardless of religious views, political affiliation, or choice for a public or non-public education for children. We believe in stakeholders, not stockholders. This is a forum for ANYONE who cares about the essence of education as well rounded and meaningful for everyone involved.
